Should You Use an Electronic Bark
Collar?
The electronic bark collar has received a lot of negative
attention over the years. Some of this is rightfully so, but
today's modern electronic bark collar is a very humane option
for pet owners.
Multiple Correction Levels
In the past people would refer to these types of collars as
a shock collar. This is because some of these collars would
actually administer quite a severe shock to the dog.
But thanks to customer and Humane Society complaints, most
electronic bark collars now come with a multitude of correction
settings.
So that way if you have a stubborn dog or a dog that barely
barks, you can find the right correction level for that
dog.
False Activation
Another problem in the past would be some of these
electronic bark collars would go off with any loud sound in the
room, even another dogs barking. Thus this would administer
correction to your dog, even if they did not bark.
To get around this many manufacturers have now installed
more sensitive sensors into their collars. Most of these
collars can now only be activated by sensing vibrations from
your dog's own vocal cords and the barking sound. This
tool prevents a lot of false corrections for your dog.
Battery Life
Another major problem in the past with these types of
collars would be that their batteries were always running low.
To correct for this many manufacturers now include sleeper
modes, where the battery is not used at all when the dogs are
not barking.
This greatly extends battery life, and makes an electronic
bark collar more convenient to use.
Summary
So if you're wondering whether or not to use an electronic
bark collar, you should you should be able use one safely and
humanely.
The most important thing is to make sure that it is fitted
properly around your dog's neck, and that you do not leave your
dog with it on until he gets used to it.
